How to save money!

When buying big ticket items like boats or snowmobiles there are two ways to save money. They both revolve around business realities.

Reality number one is we have to order very far in advance of the season. The big Ski-Doo meeting will happen in February where the 2013 models will be announced. The crazy part is dealers have to tell BRP then what they want to order for early winter 2012. It is big money, and very much an educated guess as to what will be popular and what will not next winter. Throw economic uncertainty and weather patterns in the mix, and dealers are being conservative. Better to be short then end up with a million bucks of unsold inventory!

The same goes for boats. It takes 3-4 months to get a boat from a manufacturer to Alaska. Boats ordered in February will arrive around the end of May. Very few large boats will get ordered wjust hoping somebody might buy them. Too risky these days.

Mining gear ordered last month (December) will hopefully get here by March. The gold rush means there are shortages.

So how to save money? Early ordering and long lead times is a business risk. It has costs, mostly in bad guesses, leading to inventory carrying costs or liquidation losses. You save us money by removing that risk, and you do that by ordering early. Spring check that snowmobile, buy that boat at the boat show, put money on that gold dredge now, and you are going to save money. And get what you want when you want it.

The second way to save money is to to be a gambler. Wait until February to buy a snowmobile. Wait until July to buy a boat. Wait until August to buy a gold dredge. The pressure is on dealers more than ever to clear remaining inventory at the end of the season. The problem of course is what you want may be sold out, and if you do get what you want, the season for using it is half over. But great deals can be had this way if you get lucky.

Use those business realities to save money. Remove our risk by buying early and you will save money. Or take advantage of our ordering mistakes and buy late and you will save money. Try not to get stuck in the middle. The worst time to shop for a snowblower is in the middle of a blizzard!
