Hope we hear a report from somebody at some point. I leave for Ganes on Saturday. A lot of first week people are staying for week two so I will meet many of them next week. Much of the gold found with metal detectors in Alaska this year is going to be found in the coming month at Ganes. Not sure about week one but I can promise reports from me on week two and three.

Hello Dave, No it does not look like it. I had my name put on the wait list awhile back however, I do not think Doug got enough people to add another week. So I will have to wait until 2013. In the meantime, have fun and I hope you find a big one!...Tyrie

Doug sold out in a week. I think he had enough people to add another month. They just decided 5 weeks was enough. The grumblers are taking a toll.

Sorry you did not make it!

Greetings Steve,

No worries for me, I will just wait until next year. My plan is to be ready to reserve a spot in 2013 , week 1 or 2. In the meantime, have a great 2 weeks this year and hope you find a big one too!...Tyrie

Good morning Gaines Creek- I just arrived back into town, watching the news channels- for weather conditions so I can determine what I neeed in the way of rain gear. We experience lots of rain through Canada and lots of rain since being home. Saw the one posting of 3.5 oz-just off of the cuff- what detectors are being used- I'm trying to pack my gear- Gold bug pro, 2 minelabs gold packs and a 4500. Yes, bring 4, last year rains taught me a lesson. I headed out for for the last 2 weeks july 1-14. Moose Nuggets--do I need to bring a stock of Sweeter Sweets? Dennis L

Dennis, Just my opinion, but way too many detectors!! Took three last year and it was not necessary. Two at max, one as backup. See you in July and Good Luck!!! GaryC/SanBdno

1. Always bring rain gear.
2. The White's MXT and Minelab X-Terra 705 seem most popular at Ganes these days. But any good VLF detector will work if the person using it knows what they are doing.
3. The more stuff you pack the more chance Pen Air will leave it behind as they do have weight and balance restrictions. But it will catch up in a day or two. Two detectors minimum beyond that whatever floats your boat.
4. No Sweeter Sweets for me. She is staying home.

Yes Dave, I found it with the 705, stock 7.5 kHz concentric coil at about 8 inches with a nice solid signal. The nugget has a target ID of 34 right on the surface, but decreases as you move away from it (stays positive, though). Overall, I was extremely impressed with the 705 and think it is a great detector, especially for Ganes. I also saw several MXTs, Gold Bugs, and GMTs, which all performed well.

The Ganes mining crew couldn't have been more accommodating and were just great people to hang with for a week. I also had a fun group of detectorists with me in the trenches for our 12-15 hour days. I'm truly blessed to have had this experience and hope the guys keep this opportunity available in the future. Good luck to the rest of you heading out this year, I'm sure we left plenty more to be found!
