A gold nugget with an estimated value of more than $300,000 has been unearthed near Ballarat in Victoria's west by a prospector with a metal detector.

Guess there are still a few big ones left in Oz! I am going to return there someday.

We both know they are not everywhere to be found though. As time passes nostalgia is setting in for me. The gold was not all that great but the hunting conditions were as close to perfect as I could hope for. Take the flies away and it is detecting heaven.

The odd shape of that nugget has gotta add more value to it. Nice chunk of gold!

Anybody have a clue what type of detector he used?

It was found about 60 centimetres below the surface of the earth, with the prospector using a state-of-the-art detector worth upwards of $6000 - aMinelab GPX-5000.

That'll sell a few Minelabs!! :D
